The Retba is named for Lac Retba, a.k.a. Lac Rose (meaning Pink Lake) which lies north of the Cap Vert peninsula of Senegal, some 30 km north-east of Dakar. The lake's pink waters are caused by Dunaliella salina algae and is known for its high salt content, of up to 40% in some areas.
