This handcrafted cowry shell pendant necklace dates back to the Kingdom of Kush, an ancient kingdom in Nubia, located at the Sudanese and southern Egyptian Nile Valley, centered at Napata.
The monarchs of Kush were also the pharaohs of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Egypt, until they were expelled from Egypt by the Neo-Assyrian Empire under the rule of Esarhaddon a in the 9th century BC. The Kingdom of Kush persisted in its new capital at Meroe until the 4th century AD, when it weakened and disintegrated due to internal rebellion.
The necklace design endured, transcended cultures and borders, to become an iconic symbol of African pride worn all over the world
